Water Disinfection

For Sewage and Waste Water Treatment

Through wastewater treatment plants many different pathogens get in the water cycle and the environment. Bacterial loads in effluents from sewage treatment plants may lead to a contamination with pathogens in fish, fruit and vegetable production and cattle watering tanks.

To reduce the risk of infection by effluents, the processes of wastewater treatment plants are disinfected in some plants. But often no disinfection takes place at all. Since wastewater is usually not treated to produce drinking water in sewage plants, disinfection is often not considered necessary. Additionally, the resulting disinfection by-products in many chemical disinfection methods are considered highly questionable in terms of their environmental impact.

If chemical disinfection methods are deployed, there are mostly chlorine or ozone systems. The ozone disinfection has the advantage of good disinfection performance. At the same time, however, it is associated with high costs, environmental pollution caused by oxidation by-products and the necessity of sophisticated technology combined with high safety risk in case of malfunction. When compared to ozonation chlorine gas disinfection is a relatively inexpensive process that effectively removes germs. However, harmful chlorination disinfection by-products are also emitted (e.g. carcinogenic chloramines) and a substantial safety risk during transport, storage and use of the hazardous chlorine has to be taken into account.

REDO technology allows wastewater treatment plants to substantially reduce the costs associated with chlorine gas, the potential safety risk of ozonation and the exposure to disinfection by-products. The main advantages of REDO technology are:

  • No safety risks in the production and application of the disinfectant solution
  • No safety risks during transport and storage of hazardous substances
  • Avoidance of toxic or carcinogenic disinfection by-products (THMs)
  • Effectiveness through strong disinfection effect, even on resistant germs
  • Simple operational handling and low maintenance
  • Low operational costs
  • Improved public perception due to improved eco-friendliness, higher safety and better health protection

These key advantages are based, among other factors, on a mix of several disinfecting agents. Different disinfecting agents address different efficacy spectra and activity patterns over time. Compared to conventional chlorination REDO Technology has an optimized disinfection effect even with "difficult" germs, and, at the same time, the individual components require very low doses of disinfection solution. This results in fundamental advantages of the REDO technology, such as the almost none existing disinfection by-products and the safety of the process.
